GOING BEYOND BELIEF, by Gail Gupton

How do you know when you’ve made a perfect score on an examination paper?

Often people ask what my beliefs are. I used to tell them “I believe such and such” at which time they would tell me their beliefs. One day it dawned on me that beliefs are as rampant as the wind. Not only do beliefs differ, but they change according to circumstances and conditions of life.

The religious beliefs of the congregation in one place of worship and in the same locality as a religious denomination down the block can be as diverse as the beliefs of people in foreign lands. So what makes one right and another wrong? Only personal opinion and concepts.

Truth never changes. Truth is solid as a rock. There is only one answer in Truth.

As a child did you ever make up stories to tell your parents or your friends or teachers about where you had been or what you had done? Of course, we all have done such. And, as you know, remembering the untruth is far more difficult than remembering the real truth. What we call ‘facts’ are not facts at all if they change. Much like a story we told in our youth. Some might call irrelative things merely exaggerations or ‘little white lies’, but nevertheless it is not the truth and often gets spread around as rumor to be accepted as true.

Religious teaching is no different. What makes one’s belief waver and change? Simple. The real truth was never recognized and realized into the human consciousness.

The facts taught by every great mystic, including Jesus, have always been the same, although perhaps addressed in various manners and methods. The truth is that we are all one with God and God is one with us, individually and collectively. How a person interprets this message of oneness, or lack of it, determines his or her ‘belief’ system. Then, depending on their marketing abilities and endeavors, they convince multitudes of people that their interpretation is the ‘right’ one.

Mathematics and music are based on spiritual principles and are both extremely helpful in understanding the relationship of other principles.

With mathematics, there is only one correct answer and untold countless erroneous answers. Solving a mathematical problem using the wrong formula, no matter how many times you apply that formula, will always result in a wrong solution. The student telling the math teacher, “I believe I can solve this calculation” does not mean he can.

Try playing a musical instrument you’ve never played before and see how the sound of the notes comes out. You’re playing them, but for some reason it doesn’t sound perfect. The principle of notes never changes, so we must be lacking in our understanding of how to play and what the principle of music entails. The student telling the music teacher, “I believe I can play this tune” does not mean he will.

Likewise, when someone says, “I believe it’s going to rain today” their ‘belief’ won’t make it rain.

Once a person becomes aware of the reality of fact, beliefs vanish into knowingness. There is no other way to exchange belief into truth until it is realized as fact and as unwavering Principle.

God is Principle. God’s perfection never fluctuates. God’s infinite nature never changes, yet God is always changing in form and substance because God is infinitely All, visible and invisible. There is no separation between God and life. There is no separation between God and Son; God and mankind – once we obtain this understanding of the principle of oneness.

Instead of instilling my beliefs into the consciousness of others, I now have a realization of fact. Therefore, when someone inquires as to my beliefs today, I have to reply, “I have none”. Only those with the spiritual understanding of principle would understand this reply due to spiritual growth.

So how does a person feel when they put down their pencil after writing the correct answers on an examination paper? The same way Jesus felt when he beheld the multitudes of people and told them of God’s oneness. Our Father, Your Father, Thy Father is within and is one with life. With this feeling, you don’t believe anything– you just KNOW.

This knowingness brings total satisfaction and fulfillment. This knowingness reveals abundant life.

All former beliefs of God and religion are left behind in the flowing currents of wind!.

In oneness. . .
