| WHAT IS TRUTH? by Gail Gupton |
| Pontius Pilate
asked this very important question (John 18:38) and got no reply. The Bible has 221 references to the word 'truth' and people still have the same elusive question in their minds two thousand years later. As all people know, over a period of time truth gets stretched, far-fetched, or forgotten. How many times does one read the Bible and ponder the word 'truth'? What exactly does it mean? Ask a hundred people and you'll get a hundred different answers. For the most part one does not even think about it at all; the word is just that, a word to be skipped over and assumed. Yes, one often acknowledges that Jesus spoke the truth, but do they know what it was Jesus spoke about? Society has given everyone the right to choose what's true to each individual. This compares greatly to what is considered 'normal' in society. There is no such thing except that normal is the majority of a given statistic. If the majority of people in the world were tatooed from head to toe, garnished purple hair, and wore a bone in their nostrils, it would be considered normal to have those characteristics. So, the word 'normal' has come to mean whatever people accept. The word 'Truth' has fallen into the same universal system of belief. Listening to sermons, 'Truth' may mean evil is a power to be overcome by God. 'Truth' may mean we all have to leave our earthly bodies to find ourselves in heaven. 'Truth' may mean we're all doomed sinners until we recognize a savior. Truth taught by Jesus or by his followers? True or false? The Truth Jesus spoke of was relative to man's oneness with God. Pontius Pilate would not have understood the answer to his question if Jesus discussed it with him, as Pilate was living in a different 'world' - one of materialism, human power, and greed. Words of spiritual wisdom and truth would have been foreign to him so why even bother. Jesus knew his answer would fall onto deaf ears. To discover something as 'true' defines it as a fact. There is no other. There is only one truth; one fact about any thing or any situation. The old saying goes, a woman is either pregnant or not. There is no in-between. One cannot be only a part of something. Truth is either true and factual, or it doesn't exist. A fact can be proven. One can never prove a negative. When you read the Bible and come across something you believe to be 'truth' ask yourself "it is a fact?". If the message contains more than just a printed word, you have a new understanding. There is only one Truth in the spiritual realm. It is not divided up or multiplied. It is not fragmented, partial, or frayed. It is not meant for only a certain group of people. It is not dependent on a particular action. It has no conditions or repercussions. It has no justification for argument. It just IS. Jesus lived the Truth he taught and he supposedly taught us to go and do likewise. But how can one do such, if he or she does not know what the Truth entails? Jesus was not being only a good human. Those persons who believe in good humanhood as giving one authentication to teach Truth may be deceptive to those they're teaching. Charity, forgiveness, and mercy are human characteristics and are not necessarily required, although these qualities always follow spiritual understanding. In my new book, 'The 31-Day Diet of Spiritual Enlightenment', you can read more about the Truth Jesus taught. What is Truth? The answer is within you, waiting to be realized. All is well. |
