IS THERE MORE THAN ONE GOD? by Gail Gupton |
|
The inscription on the charm reads, "Thou shalt have no other goods before me." I discovered a charm bracelet containing little metal scrolls, or writing tablets, of the Ten Commandments. Of course, the inscription was an obvious error but it did catch my attention. Was it the maker's intention? I thought to myself, "After all, the words 'god' and 'good' are synonymous. God IS good, and good is God. Everyone knows the word 'IS' means equal to." Further contemplation revealed the fact of impossibility of even having another God to put before the ONE. In the days of Moses, when men worshipped many different mythological gods, Moses realized the truth of Oneness and his oneness with God while in meditation. At that time there were dozens of named gods who protected or ruled almost every aspect of one's life and/or afterlife. Each god was to 'save' the ancient person from evil spirits, to protect them or their possessions from harm; to guide them into war; to bring about a fruitful harvest, etc., etc. Moses came back to the world from his 'mountaintop', his higher conscious union with God, to try to teach others about ONE God and the truth of 'being one' with this omnipotent God. . . . but in vain. The majority of people were probably too busy having rambunctious fun and may have been suspicious of someone else's enlightenment, considering it 'foolishness'. Rather than wanting to understand the parting of the Red Sea or the 'miracles' Moses performed, they simply took advantage of it. Consequently, an abundance of Greek and Roman gods appeared until finally another spiritually stronger, more enlightened person, named Jesus, came to earth. Jesus, like Moses, also attempted to teach people of their oneness with God - but on a higher and deeper level of understanding. Again, it fell on deaf ears. The 'miracles' Jesus performed were far more, and far more beneficial to the recipients than the miraculous accomplishments of Moses. People began to spread the word about supernatural occurrences they witnessed. However, instead of wanting to understand the message of oneness with God, they saw the messenger as a person to be worshiped. People have always been caught up in themselves - in humanhood, which, as in days of old, will fail to save persons from their sin and ignorance. Now, society has unknowingly reverted back to the days before Moses, with different names for their gods. Think about it for a moment: Mankind worships money. We put money above all else. Now, definitely we need a form of exchange, but do we put the desire for money before the desire to realize God's presence and omnipotence? Are we seeing ourselves as putting other 'goods' before me (God)? Ah, we are blind. Mankind worships Satan. We deem a power above God each time we believe a statement of disease, lack, or limitation. The message of Jesus eliminates these false gods. Which do we tend to accept? Is our God omnipotent or not? Is our God secondary to another power? Ah, indeed, God has become secondary. Mankind worships entertainment. We put entertainment and fun at the top of our list of 'things to do when we're not at work'. Have we created a god of leisure, much like our ancient ancestors would have done? Do we actually 'pray' to God to protect our 'team' and lead them to victory? Ah, indeed we do! Mankind worships events. We put so much emphasis on holidays and sporting Play-Off games, that teaching our children the nature of God and their oneness with God is too far down on the ladder to matter. Are we teaching a message which will bring the kingdom of God into manifestation in the lives of our offspring or one of rugged competition? Ah, good question. Mankind worships people. We use icons of saints and symbols of Holy men much like Egyptians displayed a golden calf on their alters. What's the difference except in form? Holy men, past or present, are messengers; not to be worshipped, but from which to learn. Do we pray to images of people, or do we pray to understand their spiritual messages? Ah, you know the answer! Mankind worships the good
things in life -. good fortune, good health, good companionship, good food, good times.
This little 'Ten Commandments' charm, with its mis-spelled word, reveals the Truth. Just think about it. All is well. |
